In 2023, the Russian Railways network transported 7.4 million TEU (equivalent to a 20-foot container) of loaded and empty containers, which is 14% more than in 2022.
Containers carry consumer goods, so this growth is an indicator of the health of the economy. But the turn of goods flows to the East is difficult for carriers. Infrastructure restrictions on the network have increased against the backdrop of increased intensity of work to modernize the Eastern Polygon, and the priority of container transportation by rail is relatively low. Because of this, the speed of container trains and the volume of approvals for such trains for shipment have decreased. The situation was aggravated by the strongest increase in container shipping rates from China in 1.5 years due to the current shortage of containers in the country. In an interview with Vedomosti, the owner of the container operator LOGOPER (specializing in transportation to Asia and back) Alexander Kakhidze spoke about how to find reserves to increase transportation in such conditions and why new terminals need to be built.
